Periodic Maintenance of Natural Grass Football Field

  1. Lawn Mowing: Natural grass length should be approximately 2.5cm or 3cm on average. This height does not hinder or disrupt heavy jumping and rolling activities. Also, it does not hinder the football players. For these reasons, grass height is one of the most important factors in football. To ensure this, it should be done with a good automatic lawn mower with sharp blades. These machines can be “lawn tractors” or “roller blade lawn mowers”.

  2. Root Aeration: Root aeration, also known as Verti-Drain, is a necessary process to prevent the soil from becoming compressed over time, leaving the grass roots airless. Due to adverse conditions such as intense football playing, rain and rolling, the 10cm soil part to which the natural grass ground adheres begins to be affected by airlessness. A special machine is required for root aeration. The blades called tine in the machine penetrate the soil up to 10cm from the surface and provide ventilation. It is sufficient to perform verti-drain twice a year. Following the process, sandblasting, fertilizing and seeding increases the growth and strength of the grass.

  3. Surface Ventilation: Turf surface aeration process is also known as “verti-cut”. Verti-cut machine is a special aeration machine with special grass tires, 100-130cm wide and a grass residue tank. It collects the dead layer left on the surface after mowing the grass.

  4. Sandblasting: Sandblasting process, also known as Top Dressing, is done with a special sandblasting machine added to the lawn tractor. The sandblasting machine width is 1.5m. The sand should be spread homogeneously on the ground. Sandblasting is done after operations that may create ground deformation such as aeration, intercropping and verticut. The sand to be used in the process should be 0-2mm in diameter and clay-free.

  5. Lawn Spraying Process: It is done with a special spraying machine connected to the lawn tractor. It is an apparatus with 3 arms and a liquid tank. Grass feeding products should be mixed as powder or liquid in the correct manner and proportion and then applied to the football field ground with the help of a sprayer.

  6. Football Field Grass Fertilization: The process is done with a fertilizer spreader. It is not recommended to do it when the ground is wet. Slow-dissolving lawn fertilizer is applied three times a year. In addition, NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) compound fertilizer should be applied regularly every month as much as the grass needs. Regulators and hormones are also administered when necessary. It is done in the morning or evening.

  7. Dec October: Interplanting in lawns is also known as “verti-seed”. The seed mixture previously used in the field should be used. It is held in September and March. Local insemination is also recommended after matches. Rolling is done after seed planting.

  8. Rolling: It is not done on very wet or very dry ground. After operations such as seeding and intercropping, 250kg light rolling should be done. It should also be done before and after the match.
