Football Pitch Dimensions: Pitch, Goal and Markings to FIFA and UEFA Standards

Football pitch size is defined as ranges in the Laws of the Game, and 105 x 68 m has become the standard in professional stadiums. Goal, penalty area and line dimensions are fixed.

Football is one of the few sports that allows some flexibility in playing area size. The Laws of the Game published by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) define ranges for length and width. In-game dimensions such as the penalty area, goal and centre circle are the same on every pitch.

Pitch size

  • General rule: touchline (length) 90–120 m, goal line (width) 45–90 m. The pitch is always rectangular and the touchline is longer than the goal line.
  • International matches: length 100–110 m, width 64–75 m.
  • Professional stadium standard: FIFA and UEFA stadium guidance highlights 105 x 68 m, and most new stadiums are built to this size.

Goal (inside)7.32 m wide x 2.44 m high
Goal area5.5 m from each post and 5.5 m into the field (18.32 m x 5.5 m)
Penalty area16.5 m from each post and 16.5 m into the field (40.32 m x 16.5 m)

Centre circle9.15 m radius
Corner arc1 m radius
Line widthMaximum 12 cm, all lines the same width

Goalposts and crossbar must be white and no wider than the lines. The goal line is the same width as the posts.

Goals and equipment

Goals must be securely fixed, and portable goals must be secured against tipping with weights or anchors. For goal selection and safety see our goalpost selection article. Our products: goalposts, corner flagposts, ball stop netting.

Surrounds and safety zone

An obstacle-free area must be left outside the lines so players can slow down safely. In professional stadiums the same surface continues into this zone, and dugouts, the technical area, warm-up areas and advertising boards are positioned accordingly. For the technical area: substitute bench, player tunnel.

Small pitches and grassroots use

Five- and seven-a-side pitches, school pitches and youth football use much smaller sizes. Youth pitch and goal sizes follow the development programmes of the relevant federation. Commercial small-sided pitches are usually sized for 7v7 or 6v6.

Orientation and surface

For outdoor pitches a north–south long axis reduces sun in players' and goalkeepers' eyes. For surface choice see our natural grass football pitch and artificial turf pitch pages, and for drainage our football pitch drainage article. Lines are applied with a line marking machine.
