Event Flooring: A Guide for Concert, Festival and Event Venues

The success of a concert or festival is decided as much on the ground as on the stage. The right temporary flooring keeps the crowd safe, carries heavy equipment and lets the venue return to normal after the event.

Stadiums, parks, racecourses, exhibition grounds and ice rinks host events outside their main purpose on certain days of the year. Whether that conversion is safe and damage-free depends largely on temporary flooring systems. The floor must carry thousands of people, stage and sound towers, forklifts and service vehicles while protecting the surface underneath.

Types of event flooring

Turf protection panels

Used for concerts and events on natural grass. Light-transmitting, ventilated models help the grass tolerate being covered for a few days. Interlocking panels spread the load over a wide area. Example: Natural Deck flooring.

Aluminium concert floor

Suited to high-load zones such as front-of-stage, the mixing tower, heavy equipment and vehicle routes. High load capacity and fast installation. See aluminium concert floor.

Plastic sports floor (modular tiles)

Used to turn sports halls, open areas or concrete temporarily into a playing area or event floor. Quick to install and remove. See plastic sports floor.

Ice rink covers

Special systems that insulate and protect the ice so a rink can host a concert, exhibition or another sport without melting. See Ice Deck ice rink cover.

6 criteria for choosing the right system

  1. Surface underneath: natural grass, artificial turf, athletics track, wooden floor, concrete or ice each have different sensitivities.
  2. Loads: standing audience, stage legs, towers, forklifts and trucks must be calculated separately. Spreader plates are used for point loads.
  3. Duration: the total time from build to strip is decisive, especially on natural grass.
  4. Weather: water must not stay under the panels and the surface must not become slippery in rain.
  5. Access and evacuation: emergency routes, accessible access and cable crossings must be planned from the start.
  6. Installation time and crew: how many hours does the schedule allow for build and strip?

Installation and removal

A professional event floor installation usually follows these steps: measuring the area and preparing a layout plan, recording and photographing the condition of the surface, laying a protective underlay if needed, locking panels in sequence, fitting ramps and edge pieces, checks during the event, and finally removal and handover. On natural grass a recovery programme of aeration, irrigation and overseeding if needed starts immediately after removal.

Safety

  • No height differences or gaps at panel joints, which increase trip risk.
  • Sloped ramp pieces at the edges.
  • A surface that stays slip-resistant when wet.
  • Cables routed under the floor or through cable protectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flooring is used in a concert area?

Turf protection panels for audience areas on natural grass and aluminium floor systems for front-of-stage and heavy equipment zones. Modular plastic tiles suit concrete or hall floors.

How long does temporary flooring take to install?

It depends on area, system and crew size. With professional crews, large stadium floors can usually be built and removed within one to a few days.

Do turf protection panels damage grass?

Damage is minimised with the right panel and good duration management. Light-transmitting, ventilated panels help grass recover after short events.

Can event flooring be rented?

Purchase or project-based installation options are assessed according to event duration and frequency, and the best model is chosen for each project.
